MAGMA's programs for Government-Assisted Refugees


1. Resettlement and Adaptation Program (RAP)
  • Short term (4-6 weeks)

Before arrival
  • MAGMA receives information from Citizenship & Immigration Canada: name, DOB, gender, relationship to Head of Family, country of origin, document number
  • An appointment is booked with the bank

Arrival
  • Meeting newcomer(s) at the airport
  • Driving them to a temporary accommodation (apartment)

After arrival
  • Orientation on premises
  • Shopping: food and incidentals
  • Citizenship & Immigration – Interim Federal Health (IFH) documents, start-up cheque, singing agreements
  • Royal Bank – opening new account, explaining the banking system, PIN, Canadian currency
  • Emergency medical assistance
  • Brief orientation: Canada, NB, Moncton mandatory documents, accommodation


At this point the family/client has to decide if stays in Moncton or move somewhere else

  • If they choose to move somewhere else in Canada:
    • Helping newcomer(s) to make contact with relatives/friends
    • Assistance with ticket purchasing
    • Driving them to bus station/train station or airport and help with checking in
    • Orientation on what to do upon arrival to the new destination


  • If the family settles in Moncton
    • Detailed orientation: accommodation, health care system, religion, education, transportation, services available for newcomers, other ethnic groups in the community
    • Search for permanent accommodation
    • Visiting apartment(s); meeting landlord to sign lease, pay deposit and rent
    • Shopping for furniture or picking up donations
    • Shopping for household items: Dollarama, Wal-Mart, Value Village, Rinzlers, Afrikana
    • Connecting: telephone, electricity and cable
    • Moving family into the new apartment, arranging apartment
    • Referral to Benchmark testing
    • Advising immigration of the new address


2. Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program (ISAP)

  • Eligibility: until the client becomes a Canadian citizen

A needs assessment is performed:
  • Health care
    • Family physician, blood test, x-rays, dietician, specialists, dentist, optometrist, Vogue Optical (no Medicare, special coverage-IFH), Public Health regarding vaccination, meeting nutritionist
  • Family issues
  • Language – referral to LINC classes
  • Employment – referral to an employment counselor
  • Education – referral school district, college or university




Other services offered by MAGMA
  • Applications for:
    • Permanent Resident card, Social Insurance Number, Medicare, Child Tax Benefits, GST, Income Tax
    • NB Housing, income assistance, day care assistance, prenatal benefits
  • Filling out forms
    • Sponsorship, family reunification, citizenship, travel documents, student loan
  • Counseling
    • Dealing with every day issues: landlord, school, loosing documents, moving
  • Referrals
    • Doctors, dentists, optometrists, Public Health, psychologists, Pregnancy Resource Centre, NBCC, universities, schools or other programs in the community, religious groups/churches
  • Assistance with banking, bill payments and dealing with everyday issues
  • Contact with more than 30 agencies in the community
